🎵 Artist Tips: Get Paid, Stay Protected, and Own Your Sound

Whether you’re just getting started or leveling up your music career, understanding how music rights and royalties work is key to making sure you’re paid for your creativity. Below are some essential tips to help you navigate the business side of being an artist.

🎧 What Is a PRO?

A PRO (Performance Rights Organization) is a company that collects performance royalties on behalf of songwriters and publishers. These royalties are earned when your music is played publicly — on radio, TV, live venues, streaming platforms, and more.

As an artist, registering with a PRO is essential. Without it, you’re missing out on a major source of income.

🏢 Major PROs

United States

  • BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) – www.bmi.com
  • ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) – www.ascap.com
  • SESAC (by invitation only) – www.sesac.com

Tip: Most countries have a national PRO. Be sure to sign up with the one in your region or one that has a reciprocal agreement with your country.

đź’¸ How Do Royalty Splits Work?

When you create music, there are typically two types of royalties to keep in mind:

1. Publishing Royalties (Composition)

These go to the songwriters and publishers. If you wrote the lyrics or composed the melody, you’re owed this share.

  • Typical split:
    • 50% to the songwriter
    • 50% to the publisher (if you don’t have a publisher, you keep 100%)

2. Master Royalties (Sound Recording)

These go to the owners of the final recorded version — usually the artist, label, or producer who paid for the recording.

  • Split depends on the agreement:
    • Independent artists often own 100%
    • If you’re working with a producer or label, splits can vary (often 50/50 or negotiated)

✍️ Quick Tips for Artists

  • Always register your songs with your PRO after release.
  • Discuss splits before the song is released — and put it in writing.
  • Use split sheets during sessions to clarify who owns what.
  • Metadata matters — make sure your name, collaborators, and PRO info are attached to all releases.
  • Don’t rely only on streaming money — sync placements, PRO royalties, merch, and live shows all add up.
